FFN-supported events will explore food's role in health & climate as part of GBGW

In June, and for the third year running, Frome is hosting its next iteration of Great Big Green Week. Which, if you're unfamiliar, is what the organisers call a "[nationwide] celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature."

To explore and raise awareness of food's role in exactly that, the FFN is organising or supporting three events as part of the GBGW programme.

See below for more on that. Or, for the 8-day schedule in full, head here.

Lo Rapitenc's Market Menu

10th June, 12:00-15:00, 18:00-22:00
21 Cheap St, Frome BA11 1BN
Booking advised, but not required

Just like how restaurants used to source their ingredients (some around Borough Market, for instance, still do), Lo Rapitenc looks for inspiration just outside its doors.

On Somerset Farmers Market day, the deli and restaurant will dream up a Spanish tapas menu but with a Somerset twist, sourcing some of the best produce to come out of the county. That could mean pork from agroecological farmers Gothelney Farm, organic veg from Radford Mill, goat's cheese from Shepton-based White Lake, and so on.

All in all, those booking for lunch and dinner on the 10th will find a menu espousing principles of quality, locality, low food miles, and a fair price for farmers.

Young People's Food Sustainability Workshop

13th June, 16:00-17:30
Cheese & Grain
Free, booking via Eventbrite

Science Boost is a Frome-based CIC inspiring and improving the literacy of children and young people in the realm of science. For this event upstairs in the Cheeser, they host what'll be an enlightening debate among teenagers about how their food is produced and what impact it has on our health and that of the planet's.

Hugh from the FFN will chip in on how sustainability fits into a Frome context – who's producing what in the area, whether it's compatible with conventional 'sustainable' discourses, and the challenges therein.

This Food is Rubbish

16th June, 19:00-22:00
Rye Bakery, Whittox Ln, Frome BA11 3BY
Tickets from £15 – booking via Ticket Tailor

Whether completely broken or fully working as intended, the industrial food system perpetuates narratives of waste – 30% of food is wasted before it leaves the shop, with supermarkets alone chucking away somewhere in the region of 250,000 tonnes every year.

Meanwhile, there is already a surplus of local, largely untapped food and ingredients that exist outside of conventional supply.

Following a zero-waste approach, local chef-artists Cherry Truluck and Annalee Levin have concocted an 'edible experience' incorporating these kinds of usually neglected or overlooked dishes and ingredients – think Somerset wallfish, a brioche made with curly dock, and a risotto of grains too small for milling.
